EU's Largest Shipbuilder Advocates for Vessels Equipped with AI and Nuclear Reactors

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO of Fincantieri, Europe's largest shipbuilding group based in Italy, has advocated for the construction of ships equipped with artificial intelligence systems and nuclear reactors.

Speaking to several media outlets, including Euractiv, Folgiero emphasized that artificial intelligence could become a huge competitive advantage not only in the operation of vessels, but also in shipbuilding itself — including production planning, tracking industrial progress, and supporting labor productivity.

"Europe's largest shipbuilder, Fincantieri, wants to use AI and nuclear reactors for ships," Euractiv quoted Folgiero as saying. "We need to proceed in parallel, not sequentially. We should not wait for small reactors to become a reality on land before starting to consider ways to introduce them into the maritime domain... What really matters is control over the production process, which remains a key element, even more important than artificial intelligence itself."

Folgiero stated that Fincantieri is exploring the possibility of establishing partnerships across the entire value chain in the nuclear energy sector and is open to collaborating with developers of fourth-generation marine reactor technologies.

He noted a growing trend toward using AI and automation as the "brain" of ships, helping to manage energy consumption, technical maintenance, robotics applications, and data processing platforms.
